Lab Partner: Why I started, why I continue, and what’s the point?
Posted on August 6th, 2012 by Adam Pelling-Deeves
Hello, and welcome to my new site and to my blog. This is where (when I have time) I’ll be posting ideas, inspiration and news on both professional and personal projects.
It makes sense for the first entry to introduce my Vimeo Channel, Lab Partner as it’s been my blog in video form until now.
I discovered Vimeo about five years ago while disappointed by the lack of originality and interaction on sites such as Youtube and Myspace. The very first video I saw there was Otis Bubbles, which involved a dog getting excited by the bubbles that a toy was blowing out of its arse, accompanied by a Pop-Corn style soundtrack. It was pointless and crude but it was creative, unlaboured and fun – a quick sketch by a talented hand – and the comments beneath it reflected its refreshing style.
After quickly building up a diverse collection of subscriptions, this site has fed me (daily ever since) some of the greatest audio/visual experiences of my life. So when the site introduced Channels, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to share these experiences with other people.
With over 1.5K subscribers, Lab Partner has proved to be a popular channel despite its indefinite concept. The most popular Vimeo Channels tend to be genre based: Documentaries, animation, instructional, music, typography, photography and so on.
The short description I gave to the channel has barely changed in the past four years:
“Supporting recklessly experimental talents of the moving image – individuals who effectively test the boundaries of style, technique and concept.”
What I mean by this is that the video content, as well as being entertaining or intriguing, contain elements that are either new to me or subvert standard practices. This could be in the way they look and sound, the way they’re produced, or the message or feeling they convey.
It’s basically stuff I wish I’d come up with!
The channel features regular talents such as Basile Buisson, Max Hattler, Michael Paul Young, Daniel M Karlsson, Kokofreakbean, Simon Ward, Niklas Goldbach, Sam Spreckley, Scott Fitzpatrick, BRDG, Salvador Herrera + Faro and Nikolai von Sallwitz‚ and it’s the work of artists such as these that I’ll be posting as inspiration in this blog.
Give yourself an hour to either watch it as a channel in Couch Mode or explore its homepage as an archive.
